About the Role
Dynamic real estate development firm in Queens, NY specializing in mixed-use properties, is seeking an experienced and strategic Controller. The Controller will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls for the company. This individual will play a critical role in implementing new systems, developing policies, and structuring the department for efficiency and scalability. The ideal candidate is a proactive leader with deep experience in real estate accounting, financial operations, and process improvement. Additionally, the Controller will manage a team of five accounting professionals and regularly interface with international partners, investors, and lenders.
Key Responsibilities:
· Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, treasury, and financial reporting.
· Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with GAAP.
· Lead budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis to support strategic decision-making.
· Monitor cash flow, capital expenditures, and debt management.
· Collaborate with external auditors, tax advisors, and lenders to manage financial obligations and reporting.
· Assess, select, and implement a new ERP/accounting system to enhance efficiency and scalability.
· Standardize financial policies, procedures, and controls to ensure compliance and accuracy.
· Automate reporting, reconciliation, and workflow processes to improve operational efficiency.
· Lead, mentor, and develop a team of five accounting professionals, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
· Establish clear roles and responsibilities, providing guidance on best practices and professional development.
· Ensure the accounting team is aligned with company objectives and can scale with the firm's growth.
· Serve as the primary financial liaison for international investors, joint venture partners, and lenders.
· Coordinate financial reporting, tax planning, and compliance for cross-border transactions.
· Manage currency exchange, international financial regulations, and risk assessment related to overseas investments.
· Work closely with external and internal stakeholders to ensure seamless communication and financial transparency.
· Ensure compliance with tax regulations, audits, and financial reporting requirements.
· Establish and maintain strong internal controls to mitigate risk and improve accuracy.
Qualifications & Experience:
· Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
· 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting, with at least 5 years in a real estate development, or construction environment.
· Strong knowledge of GAAP, real estate accounting, and financial reporting standards.
· Experience implementing ERP/accounting systems (Yardi, MRI, or similar preferred).
· Proven track record of developing and scaling financial operations in a growing company.
· Experience leading and developing accounting teams, with a strong ability to delegate and optimize workflows.
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interface with domestic and international partners.
The Fair market Assumption for this role's base salary is between $200,000 and $225,000 annually.
The above salary range represents Cobalt's good faith and reasonable estimate of the possible base compensation range at the time of posting and is one part of the total rewards package this client provides to employees.
