About the Role

HVAC Director of Service at a well-established Heating & Plumbing Contractor, specializing in installations and servicing of heating systems for large scale commercial buildings. This leadership role offers P&L responsibility, cross-departmental collaboration, and the opportunity to shape a rapidly scaling business unit.

Location: New York Metropolitan Area

$200,000 - $230,000 base salary + bonus + benefits

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Divisional Leadership & Management
  • Oversee the Service division's P&L, including budgeting, forecasting, and reporting on KPIs.
  • Manage, mentor, and develop the Service division team-both office and field staff.
  • Foster effective collaboration with other departments (Installations, Controls, Finance, HR) to ensure smooth project handoffs and organizational alignment.

2. Sales & Business Development

  • Drive revenue growth by securing Service Contracts, Service Jobs, and Boiler Repair Projects.
  • Identify and close sales opportunities for our Axxon boiler controls solution.
  • Act as the primary contact for key customers, ensuring high-touch account management.
  • Oversee contract negotiations and bid proposals, approving estimates and terms.
  • Proactively manage credit exposure and collections to minimize financial risk.

3. Operational Excellence

  • Ensure timely, high-quality service, with a focus on first-time fixes and long-term solutions for customers' heating and hot water systems.
  • Optimize scheduling of personnel, equipment, and materials, balancing cost and efficiency.
  • Oversee inventory control for parts, supplies, and vehicles, ensuring compliance with company policies and industry regulations.

4. ERP Implementation & Process Improvement

  • Champion the optimization of BuildOps, our recently implemented ERP system.
  • Standardize and document operating procedures in BuildOps to drive data accuracy and efficiency.
  • Continuously analyze processes to identify improvement opportunities and introduce best practices.

5. Talent Development & Training

  • Recruit, onboard, and train new technicians to bolster the Service division's capabilities.
  • Implement and refine training programs to upskill current field staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.
  • Recruit, onboard, and train new office personnel as needed.

Required Experience

  • Technical expertise in heating and hot water systems (e.g., boilers, burners, controls).
  • Project management experience with a proven record of overseeing service operations.
  • Strong customer service focus with a history of building lasting client relationships.
  • Demonstrated sales and negotiation skills, including contract management.
  • Business acumen, including P&L management and data-driven decision-making.
  • "Roll up your sleeves" mentality, willing to dive in and solve problems at every level.

Work Schedule

  • The Service department operates 24/7, and you are expected to maintain a schedule that ensures the department's best performance-including on-call availability outside regular business hours.
  • Typical on-site hours run Monday-Friday, starting at 8:00 AM (or earlier during Heating Season).
  • Flexibility is essential: the Director of Service must be prepared to respond to emergencies and urgent customer needs at all times.
